Like my brothers Paul and John I attended Belvedere College in Dublin, leaving in 1980. Following a BA in Communication Studies at Dublin City University (then NIHE) and an MA in Communication Studies at California State University in Sacramento, I began my career as an editorial assistant at International Broadcasting magazine in London in 1985, progressing to assistant editor and then editor.

In 1989 Frank Quinn persuaded me to return to Ireland to co-found and edit Playback, the first magazine for the professional audiovisual industry in this country. In addition to the monthly magazine our team also ran The Playback Show in the RDS for three years and published Ireland On Screen, the first guide to independent film and TV production companies on the island of Ireland.

In 1993 I became launch editor of Television Broadcast (TVB) Europe magazine, taking it from fifth in a market of five to market leader during 20 years as editor and then editorial director. During this time I also became editor and then editorial director of The IBC Daily, a newspaper for the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam for five days every September with a team of 20 journalists.

In 2013 I stepped down from TVBEurope and in 2014 became part-time executive editor of Sports Video Group (SVG) Europe as well as founding executive editor of IBC365, the year-round content platform for IBC. In 2017 I wrote and published a 280-page book titled Billy Ringrose: A Memoir of my Father, along with my publishing partner Frank Quinn (www.billyringrose.ie). In 2017 I also went full-time with SVG as editorial director for Europe, stepping down from that role to become a freelance writer and editor in 2020.

In 2021 I was hired as Live Production editor for the launch of NAB Amplify, the new content platform for the National Association of Broadcasters in Washington DC — a role I held for one year. In 2023 I was contracted by the IBC show to become chair of judging for its Innovation Awards, a part-time role I continue to hold alongside my work as an independent writer and editor.
